Social media participation hits 65%, Europe lags behind.

It is reported that 65% of Americans now regularly participate in social media, there are variations across the demographic but one thing is sure as a European, we are lagging seriously behind. We seem to be at the stage where we are rapidly progressing through the bell curve but I wonder how the next year or two will shape up.

Someone who has been involved in online media management a while longer than I have would probably know the answer, but do we Europeans simply end up taking the best of the internet, or do we take whatever the American market deems worthwhile regardless of whether it fits our own unique needs?

I am going to have a look into it, but from memory European social media participation is around 20-30% in 2011 which is quite far behind. We have access to the same tools, technology and infrastructure (in many cases better connectivity) so why are we lagging behind in tech-take-up and in many cases online innovation, although that’s another post altogether.
